Thanks for the input! I'm just wondering if there are any cars I haven't considered, and this helps the list.
Of course, if I got a BMW it would be all BMW posse at Copy Products network division :).
Big one will be talking Kathy into selling the van, she does like it. Good thing is she HATES her mom's new van so we won't be getting that one as a hand-me-down. I hate it too :).
I'm just amazed there isn't more choices in fuel efficient cars that can haul a decent amount of stuff. You're really just making an empty box at the back of the vehicle, it can't weigh much more than a trunk you would think.
I guess some of this is the thinking behind the Scion XB and Nissan Cube.
I need to make a spreadsheet to figure out approximate gas savings at different MPG levels and see if it's really worth it to push for a super economical vehicle. It did make good sense for Kathy to go to the Beetle from the van, I figured that out - $50 savings in gas a month minimum.

I'd sacrifice 5-10 MPG and open up a world of possibilities. Do you really drive enough to notice a huge difference in fuel costs over a year? America just hasnt been on the Eco train as long as Europe. They get all of those while we get big pickups and SUVs. We now have the Japanese econoboxes, but none of them are really old enough to fit your budget. _________________

Either get a 92-00 Civic with tiny 1.5/1.6 engine and get almost your desired mpg, or get something mo better that you will probably be happier with in the long run while sacrificing 5mpg city. _________________ Fighters is kind of the best.

I drive my vehicle on service calls FOR work and I put some CRAZY miles on. Last mileage sheet I turned in for work I did over 900 miles in 2 weeks - this is documented miles for work, but there's more than that that wasn't documented, like driving to/from the shop, driving around town, etc. That was a few trips to Navarre, Pace/Milton, Perdido, and Mobile in there.
We do get paid mileage, but the better your MPG the sweeter the gas check is. Right now we get around 38 cents per mile.
It would be a whole different story if I had a regular commute of drive car to work, park it, then drive home at the end of the day. I'm literally in the car a large portion of the day.

it seems like you have the TDI on your mind the most. So find one that either had the transmission replaced or keep some money aside when the time comes that will would most likely go out. _________________ 1997 Nissan Sentra GXE - 40+ MPG, tunes, DD.

At the time, there were three in ATL that we were seriously considering going to test drive and possibly buy, and they were all $8k+. Two were '02s, one was an '01. _________________ Joey

In order to achieve your desired MPG figures, the budget will probably need a good bump. _________________

there is a decent looking 1991 civic 4 door just off gulf beach hwy, south/west of fairfield drive.
it is or was a BP gas station. it may be a mom/pop type shop now.
chris may be able to chime in on it.
car looked decent from the road.
it was either black, or that dark metallic color honda offered.
i dig those body styles. _________________ TJ
